Data based on the FBI Crime Data Explorer (UCR) — rate per 1,000 residents

This tool shows state-level reported crime statistics as a rate per 1,000 residents. Figures are compiled from the FBI Crime Data Explorer (UCR) and BJS reporting and are intended for orientation.

Methodology and sources

The figures in this tool are compiled from reported-crime statistics collected by US law enforcement and published through the FBI Crime Data Explorer (UCR) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).

  • Rates are expressed per 1,000 residents at the state level using Census population estimates.
  • The data covers offenses reported to and recorded by law enforcement. It does not reflect every crime committed (unreported crime is not counted).
  • The safety score (out of 10) is a composite indicator calculated from the different crime rates relative to the national averages.
  • "Home invasion" refers to a robbery committed in an occupied home.
